What Is Whistleblowing And When Is It Useful?
Each organization has a definition of “whistleblowing,” but generally, it is the act of revealing wrongdoing to the attention of authorities. In the medical field, bringing attention to a serious problem could save a patient’s life. However, not all issues are life threatening. Sometimes, nurses see insurance fraud or similar misconduct.

Nurses – You’re More Important Than You Think
While it certainly ought to go without saying that nurses are some of the most important people in the medical world, it is all too easy to sometimes view them in a poor light. Much of the problem stems from poor, preconceived notions of nurses spurred on by the media and even real-life. In medical dramas we see nurses portrayed as almost servants to the college-learned doctors and we even see doctors in the real world take certain liberties with the nursing staff in order to subjugate them further. However, if you are a nurse, then you are in charge of maintaining the safety of those under your care – you have to stand up and be heard.
Just because you are a nurse does not mean you don’t have a voice and, furthermore, does not mean you can’t affect change in the medical world. If a patient is being misdiagnosed and you know this, then speak up while presenting your evidence. If the hospital is using subpar equipment that could well be older than you or is getting energy supplies from an inefficient provider – if any of these things are threatening the lives of the patients under your care then you have the moral and professional obligation to speak out.
As a nurse, you are much more important than you might realize. It is up to you to make a stand when it comes to the lives of the people that are under your care. Do not get buried in politics.
Whistleblowing: When It Is Appropriate To Be A Whistleblower
Being a whistleblower or deciding whether or not you want to become one can present some rather difficult ethical questions. Society teaches us from a young age that it is often wrong to report our friends’ or colleagues’ wrongdoings or mistakes. It shows a lack of loyalty, and in the most extreme circumstances it could ruin the professional careers of many people including the whistleblower himself. This is perhaps the biggest reason why so many people are willing to look the other way or even outright lie rather than Continue reading
